Use DaVinci Resolve 12.5 to upload your HDR videos on YouTube!

Updated: Feb 28, 2023

Finally, YouTube has announced that it now supports HDR (High Dynamic Range) videos which is great news for colourists who are also grading work for digital content like myself.

(* Good news for Ad agencies and major Brand's channels too).

So Youtube has published a post to explain how it will all work and how to upload your HDR videos in this blog.

The process for uploading HDR videos remains the same, but the only difference is that the video must contain HDR metadata in its codec or wrapper… And guess what, according to Google support, “the most reliable way to properly record the metadata is to export from a supported application such as BlackMagic DaVinci Resolve 12.5.2.”

Great stuff! Another reason it was worth investing in this full STUDIO version !

The only catch for now is that anyone can play videos uploaded in HDR, but they will need to watch them on a device that allows HDR playback like an HDR TV equipped with Chromecast Ultra to actually see the full colour range... ah!

So this is mostly aimed at 4k TVs for now and anyone with a 1080p TV / screen will not be able to see images in High Dynamic Range until technology advances enough for 4k to become the norm… a few years ...maybe sooner. Who knows. Fingers crossed!

Still …this is promising for colourists working with DaVinci Resolve 12.5 !
