Keeping it up.

As we glide our way to Christmas through our third lockdown, the industry appears to be setting the way for a brighter future; from mentoring schemes, free online training and back-to-work support schemes, to the exciting release of new software and online platforms, including the new DaVinci Resolve 17, everything is there to give everyone the chance to breathe again.

So there we have it, BlackmagicDesign has released DaVinci Resolve 17, and whilst it has over 100 new features, when it comes to colour, it has hit the mark this time around with some really useful new creative tools.

We can start with the new HDR palette which lets you create custom colour wheels for targeted corrections; the primary controls have a new design that makes them easier to use, magic mask uses the DaVinci Neural Engine to automatically isolate and track objects, and the new mesh and grid-based colour warper lets you push and morph colours in new creative ways.

Power Window drawing has been improved too, there are new split-screen wipe options, an additional Sat vs Lum curve, improved scopes, support for 17 point 3D LUTs and more.

Plus, the large new DaVinci wide-gamut colour space enables even higher quality image processing and colour management.

Senior colourist Darren Mostyn *(aka Online Creative) has been exploring some of these exciting features in his online Youtube tutorials.

Here is what’s new in the Colour tab with Senior Colourist Darren Mostyn

Now, while most us are either back at work, mentoring or training or all of the above, it is also important to remember that many people have not been so lucky, which is why I wanted to add a few words about the amazing charity, the Film and TV Charity, that is doing an incredible job at the moment to help support all the freelancers out there who are struggling and finding their way back to work.

And for those who are just starting out, ScreenSKills, BFI and Fourcorners film have also been incredibly proactive in getting everyone up to speed. Together they have recently launched a great series of totally free training: Making the Grade

that is offering its participants four months of professional support, including: Free DaVinci Resolve training, industry talks and webinars, mentoring by industry professionals and one to one support for each participant.

And finally, I have more great news to share, LucidePost has been also very proactive over the last year and we are excited to announce that we are reaching out to the Gaming industry.

The company has now extended its skills and his looking to work with more game studios providing in-game scenematic cut-scenes and bespoke animations in Unity, the cross-platform game engine.

And whilst the Unreel game engine is taking the post-production world by storm, Unity is a brilliant software for all platforms, from phone apps, VR, games, engineering and more.

We have been working with some fantastic team, such as the Ichi and Roll7 teams creating bespoke animation for trailers, more to come soon.

A Plus!
